Cary Town Council Members Deposed by Four Unknown Assailants

In a harrowing and bizarre turn of events Monday afternoon, Cary’s Town Council was besieged by four as-yet unidentified activists. The fringe group, identifying themselves only as the Suburban Poultrification Alliance, forcefully removed four beloved members of Town Council and immediately called an emergency session of the council. Carolina Vernacular

This soon to be finished project in Holly Springs represents the first new residence that I have had the opportunity to manage from Schematic Design all the way through Construction Administration. For the moment I have only included a taste of the the exterior of the house, but as the builder wraps things up on site, I will be thoroughly photodocumenting the project and putting together a brief essay and presentation for the blog. So keep your eyes open for that, hopefully coming in late October, and in the meantime, enjoy the handful of shots I took while out on site this afternoon.

LEED McDonalds coming to Cary?

The News and Observer reports that the McDonalds that I walked to many a time in Middle and High School may be going green… If it happens, and is approved by the USGBC, it will be the 3rd LEED certified McDonalds in the United States. I haven’t had McDonalds for anything besides breakfast in years (and the breakfast thing is really out of necessity… options for a quick bite down east are few and far between.)

While I doubt such a renovation will change my dining habits, I can certainly commend Ric Richards on his decision to think long-term rather than short term in renovating the old restaurant. (If the new establishment is the same footprint as the existing, the $2 million rehab project will come it at about $480/square foot… I don’t know what your average McD’s in North Carolina costs to get off the ground, but I think it’s safe to say that this decision is based on something more than making money.)

Hopefully this will be one more step towards a more progressive Cary as far as development is concerned… We’ve had a reputation for being an ultra-conservative, sprawl-driven community for too long. Cary was the home of the first public high school in the state of North Carolina, Cary High was established in 1896. A brief look at our history will show that we are much more than just an Automobile Suburb of Raleigh, and I think it’s time to revisit that reputation. In the two hundred fifty-eight years since Cary’s founding we’ve grown a lot, more out than up unfortunately, but it’s never too late to move in the right direction.

Here’s to hoping for a more diverse, more walkable, and more sustainable Cary to come!

Red Meat

We did manage to get to Slyman’s for breakfast / lunch this morning. I’m not a huge meat-eater, but this place has the greatest corned beef sandwich I’ve had in my entire life. I highly recommend it to anyone who finds themselves in Cleveland. Raleigh’s downtown could really benefit from a place like it.

We also took a short drive around downtown, but the grayness of the rain kept me from getting too many cool pictures… Hopefully Julie & I will get a chance to come up here some time just to photograph the industrial district.

540 miles to Cleveland

Last night we left Raleigh at about 3:30pm with the aim of making it to Cleveland. The supposed ten hour drive ended up only taking us about nine hours, but for a good long stretch in West Virginia the weather was nasty. That weather would have been cool for photography, but our 70-80mph clip took a quick downturn as we made our way down and around the mountain roads.

As you might guess, things are sort of a blur just yet, and most of the photos taken on the drive were appropriately blurry as well. With any luck I’ll get some cool shots from around town today, and if I’m really lucky we’ll get a chance to stop by Slyman’s while in town. More updates to come!
